Students who wish to coordinate with OHS and our community to provide service projects have the opportunity to be recognized at their graduation ceremony. Students are strongly encouraged to take actions that will make a positive contribution to our community. In order to receive Silver Cord recognition, students must complete and verify 50 hours of voluntary service, with a minimum of 10 hours completed in Mahaska County.
The following service will not be counted toward Silver Cord hours:
*Service for which a student receives financial or other compensation or awards.
*Service that is completed to fulfill academic requirements of a class the student is enrolled in
*Service for a student's family or family business.
*Providing childcare for family members or relatives.
*Participation in campus or extracurricular school activities
If you have any questions about whether certain activities will count toward Silver Cord hours, please check with your counselor or a high school administrator in advance!
It is hoped that students choosing to take part in this effort will be able to add these accomplishments to their resume, and college & career applications, and more importantly, further develop a spirit of service that can benefit others.
