Dear Oskaloosa Parents and Guardians,
As we begin the new calendar year, it's a time for fresh beginnings and renewed focus on academic success. With that in mind, we want to inform you about significant changes to Iowa's school attendance requirements that took effect on July 1, 2024, under Senate File 2435. These new state regulations change how all schools across Iowa must monitor and address student absences, ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive through consistent attendance.
Key Points About the New Law
• The state now defines chronic absenteeism as missing 10% of school days in a grading period or school year. Oskaloosa Schools will begin to offer support and family communication before this threshold is reached in order to minimize the time students are away from classes.
• Previously excused absences such as family vacations, minor illnesses without a doctor's visit, and medical absences without documentation will now count toward truancy.
What Are Exempt Absences?
The following absences will NOT count toward truancy:
• Medical appointments with a doctor's note
• Religious services, holidays, or instruction
• Court-ordered activities
• Activities covered under an IEP or Section 504 plan
• School-related activities
• College visits
