Students painting in Art Class

5th Grade Band (Mr. Aaron Adam): 5th grade band is up and running. Students are very excited and learning about what it takes to be a music creator.  Almost everyone loves listening to music, but these students are learning how to create music, a process that is much more challenging than simply listening to music… and they are loving it!

I couldn’t be more pleased with the 85 members in the current 5th grade band.  They are doing a wonderful job of learning how to produce controlled and accurate sounds on their respective instruments. Keep in mind that “controlled and accurate” is the goal and not always achieved, after all, it is 5th grade band… but the effort is there, and with time, the sound will be there also.

I would especially like to thank our 5th grade team of teachers for their encouragement of our 5th grade students’ participation and for the elementary administrators for their support as well. Obviously, our parents are the biggest blessing that our students have. Without their encouragement and personal sacrifice, our beginning band program would not be the same. Thank you parents for your financial and emotional support… and for enduring those beginning sounds with me.

Elementary Art (Mrs. Stodghill & Ms. Bartlett): We are pleased to provide an update on the happenings within our art classrooms, with a special focus on the upcoming Holiday Art Show. Our Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade students have been very busy working on winter and holiday themed projects learning about collaging and new drawing materials. Our kinderprep classes are geared more toward classroom expectations and materials exploration.

This past trimester, we have been fostering a creative and independent learning environment within the TAB (Teaching for Artistic Behavior) classroom in grades 3, 4 and 5. Students have been actively engaged in self-directed art projects, exploring various mediums and techniques. This approach has not only allowed for individualized expression but has also contributed to the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills among our young artists.

As we approach the holiday season, anticipation is building for the Annual Winter Art Exhibit scheduled for November 22 through December 18. This event will showcase the incredible talents of our elementary, middle & high school students and provide them with a platform to exhibit their artistic creations. Parents, teachers, and the community are invited to view the artwork at Penn Central Mall. We’d like to extend an invitation to you to attend the Winter Art Exhibit, witness the artistic achievements of our students, and celebrate the enriching educational experiences taking place within our Oskaloosa Elementary Art Classrooms.
