Santa and his Reindeer came to OES! - On December 1st, Santa Claus and his Reindeer came to Oskaloosa Elementary to spread the holiday joy with students and staff! All classes were able to spend time with Santa and take a picture together as a class. It was a great experience for our campus to kick off the month of December! Thank you to Mahaska Drug for this sponsorship each year!
Student Volunteer Corps: Within Behavior Leadership and at OES, we encourage students to demonstrate their abilities to be strong leaders among their peers. Through the use of a Student Volunteer Corps (SVC), school procedures, especially for lunch, and leadership opportunities help create a feeling of positive contribution and responsibility. Each classroom, 1st-5th grades, has hired two students who exhibit positive behaviors. This group of students are given responsibilities to take care of our school throughout the year. These responsibilities allow for students to take an active role in making the school a more functional, positive place while teaching a real-world lesson about what happens to people who exhibit prosocial behaviors. (They get to do really cool things!) These SVC members can be fired if they use negative behaviors while doing their duties or while in class. These members can have responsibilities added as administrators or teachers see fit. This group of students will run procedures in the lunchroom and model positive behaviors for their peers. The duties themselves are less important than the impact on the culture school-wide.
The SVCs have taken part in a few really cool opportunities. They lead the “Locking it in” procedure during lunch. They helped deliver coffee and treats to teachers during Parent/Teacher Conference week, and most recently helped count, organize, and load up items collected during the OES Food Drive. We will continue to come up with ideas and opportunities for the SVCs to “showcase” their leadership qualities.
