Our 6th-grade students put on a spooktacular performance for the residents at Oskaloosa Care Center! After the performance, our students created Halloween-themed Mad Lib stories with the residents. This visit was a wonderful opportunity for our 6th grade students to connect with older members of the community. The residents enjoyed the company, and our students gained valuable insights from spending time with people who have so much life experience! 🎃✨

Every year, OMS 8th graders work in lab groups to create a thermos that minimizes thermal energy. Smokey Row donates a gift card to the lab group whose thermos minimizes thermal energy transfer the best. This year’s winning 8th-grade students are pictured below with the Smokey Row staff. Thank you to Smokey Row for supporting our students! A great deal of material planning and meticulous integration of what we learned about insulators and conductors went into the winning groups thermos this year. Congratulations to the team on their work!

As the Middle School Instructional Coach, one of Kirsten Stek's favorite parts of the job is working with the incredible staff and students at OMS! With our district's focus on student engagement, OMS teachers are raising the bar by getting students out of their seats, thinking, collaborating, and problem-solving. We even had the privilege of presenting our work at this year’s ITEC Conference! 🙌

Last week, OMS Physical Education classes completed the PACER (Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run) Fitness Assessment for midterm of the first trimester! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️ In total, OMS students ran a combined 192.2 miles! Fifty six percent (228 students) showed personal improvement, with 54 of those students running 80 laps or more! The PACER measures aerobic capacity by challenging students to run as long as possible while keeping pace, testing endurance, performance, and overall fitness. Our goal in OMS PE is to help students improve their cardiovascular fitness level, using the PACER as the assessment tool. Students also set personal Action Plans to track their progress and work on improving their scores. At OMS, we're all about getting our students in the Healthy Fitness Zone, where their Cardiovascular Fitness Level will improve! 🙌
